From my earliest days, I can remember boating with family between Squam Lake and Cobbetts Pond in New Hampshire. We learned how to water ski and tube, about island explorations, and how launching/retrieving with a trailer does not always go as planned.
In my late teens, my mother bought a sailboat. This Tartan 30 would be where my knowledge of sailing began. Under the guidance of her and my uncle, I learned about basic seamanship, the roles of a deckhand, and how the wind works upon sails to move a boat through the water.
While working at an IT firm, I met a client who lead an ambitious life on the water. Being asked to join one afternoon has lead to growth I would have never imagined. Local cruising and sailing, short trips of fair length, cross country missions spanning the entire eastern seaboard, and I've even been on a handful of fishing trips far beyond my qualifications. My knowledge from boating as a youth and training from aviation gave me an ability to create value on the water as a knowledgeable and safe deckhand, mechanic/engineer, and pilot.
On both of our vessels and several others, I have spent great length to repair (usually replace) and improve electrical systems. Water and electricity seem to be enemies of each other and low quality craftsmanship is plentiful within the marine community. Being able to apply my knowledge of circuit construction and integrity from the aviation world has yielded many a great result.
Unable to find anyone willing to work on a vintage outboard began my learning of how to tune and rig these engines. My first build was constructed from a parts catalog and available data. It has been regarded as impressive, each and every time I lift the cowl. This knowledge carried forward into working with our E-TEC 90HP, adding computer diagnostics and tuning into the equation.
The biggest allure to older craft is easily the wooden trim. After three boats worth of experience, I have honed my skills at the restoration and creation of these wooden components, and their options for finishing. While this art will be a life long learning experience, I find comfort in knowing I can repair as necessary and replace when required.
My wife and I found Ojo by coincidence while searching for a home in Marblehead. Her previous owner had tenure of 18 years and she showed with his love and affection from bow to stern, inside and out. While we have amassed dozens of sailing days in the past few years, I'm sure our relationship with Ojo is still in its infancy.
After restoring a 13' Whaler Classic, it quickly became apparent that we were too old for this boat. Research landed us on the 17 Montauk as the best match for our application. We searched for months in hopes of a craft paired with Evinrude's E-TEC series outboard. Finding this boat just outside of Houston, TX was the beginning of a fantastic adventure. We were home with her in 10 days and have spent the past few years refitting equipment to better match our purpose.
I received a text from my mother one night with the picture of an old Whaler and the question, "Would you like this?" Shortly thereafter, we had used this boat a handful of times before realizing a restoration project was in our future. I had no idea of the learning I was in store for.
This is the boat we inherited. Miles 2 Go was tired from a neglected life of average maintenance. She was the perfect candidate to be restored, having a little of everything that needed repair.
We removed everything from the hull and stripped all of the user applied paint, down into the factory gelcoat. Halfway through this 50 year old applied coating, the crazing had all but vanished and we began to move forward.
There were several small fiberglass repairs needing to be made. After researching techniques from Whaler publications and contemporary reading, these repairs were completed, and the hull became structurally sound again.
Epoxy topcoat was applied and new rub rail installed. A new mahogany interior was fashioned from Whaler blueprints and all of the stainless was polished to a mirror shine.
This engine was built from the transom clamp outward. The best available parts were sourced from freshwater regions, item-by-item through a complete buildout, finished with new ignition components from CDI Electronics.
Our finished result saw coastal life in the northeast and road tripped with us to Lake Superior on Michigan's Upper Peninsula. Dependable as the Whaler name predicts, this restored wonder never let us down, and was the best gateway to our own boating journey one could have asked.
Ojo came to us in the spring of 2021 after searching for quite some time. She was well outfitted for 50 years old after two decades with her previous owner. My wife and I both come from sailing backgrounds, but had no team dynamic between us. The past 3 seasons have been filled with learning and growth about sailing, while in motion and at rest.
We have set sail on numerous trips toward southern New Hampshire and Maine while headed north, coastal Rhode Island headed south, and more stops in between. Each trip brings unique instances to hone our skills and let life at sea teach us new methods to stay safe while continuing to make way.
While I don't claim to be a fisherman, I have known several, and been given the opportunity to learn about their craft hands-on. This expanded my overall maritime knowledge with understanding for yet another function of our waters and their users.
In and around the harbor on small aluminum and fiberglass boats, I learned about bait fishing and lobster trap operations. And also how to stay safe in upset water on such a small boat!
Approximately 20 miles from the coast, Stellwagen Bank serves as a great first stop for offshore fishing experience. Bottom fishing for haddock gives opportunity for some of the freshest dinner you'll ever have!
Watching professionals at work while tuna fishing is one of the most amazing things I've ever seen. It can take an hour from the first indication until you've captured these fish, and any little mistake can lead to escape!
